Chocolate Fondue

At least once in your life, you should have chocolate fondue for breakfast. Most of the fun is eating the fondue and talking to your family. The rest of the fun is when you squeal to your friends, “Hey, guess what we had for breakfast this morning?”

Check your neighbor’s house or a second-hand store for fondue sets. Otherwise, heat the chocolate in the saucepan and give each fondue-er (fondue-ee?) a small ceramic bowl for dipping.

Most chocolate fondue recipes go something like this:

Pour about 350 grams of chocolate in a saucepan. Add a bit of milk or cream and a small splash of vanilla. Melt on low heat, stirring frequently. Transfer the melted chocolate to a fondue pot, light the candle underneath, and dig in with your favorite fruit, pound cake, ladyfingers and bread.

This version is simply chocolate and peanut butter, no milk or sugar – oh yum.

Some stores sell chocolate fondue mixes, and all you have to do is plop the whole thing in the microwave for about 2 minutes, stir, heat again for another 30 seconds, and then you’re ready to eat.

Note: the only major problem with eating chocolate fondue in winter is finding local fruit that is in season. If you can’t find fruit, don’t worry: chocolate fondue works well with pound cake or a crusty French bread, so hurry and buy or bake some.

The minute lots of fresh fruit is back in season, make another date with the fondue pot. Whee!
