If you like people or languages or any combination of the two, tickle your eardrums with this nifty little accent quiz:
1. Listen to a person read 2 lines from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”.
2. Name that person’s accent.
3. Three points for the correct country, 2 bonus points for the city. 10 bonus points for convincingly imitating one of the accents in public. (I just added that last part.)
Tip: Guessing accents based on appearances, behavior or objects in the background doesn’t help as much as you want it to, which I think is terrific for all sorts of anti-stereotyping sociocultural ethno-whatchamacallit lessons.
My score? Sub-20. That’s all I’m admitting.
The friendly people who brought you this quiz are recruiting speakers for the next quiz. I spy a terrific school project: make a local version using your (far-flung) family and friends!
