Moonyay too door. Tomele tomele ma trovite.
My mom used to sing this little song to us when we were little.
Was it Italian? Was it French? None of my friends knew the tune, so I had to wait to see my mom again to get help.
After an hour or two of “Oh it’s just on the tip of my tongue!”, my mom remembered that the French song was about a miller who had fallen asleep and the vanes of his windmill were turning too quickly.
It took some snuffling before I learned how to spell miller en Frenchese, and then I found it online! The whole song – lyrics, translations, gestures and the melody – can be found right here on Mama Lisa’s site!
Now I’m wondering about the song La meunière est bien malade – The miler’s wife is sick and now her mill doesn’t turn.
There’s a happy lesson in all of this…I know! Take your kids to a farm and a mill to learn where the wheat for your bread comes from!
Off you go!
