Summer School in the Pool

Three kids in a kiddie pool in the backyard, and it was age-appropriate science class (but shhh don’t tell them that).

The oldest one found the pool diapers for the younger two (synthetic material absorption rates).

She said no, the pool needed to be placed in the sun, otherwise the water would be too cold (temperatures, senses). But the pool did need to be moved, because ants had moved in underneath since the last pool event (ecosystems and the possible destruction thereof).

The littlest had 3 plastic bottles, which she quickly discovered were fun to fill with water and then drop kerplunk into the pool. She also soon realized the largest bottle produced the most pleasing plop if she dropped it while standing on her tippy-toes (gravity, heights, weights, sizes, cause and effect).

The middle kid (close in age to the littlest) stood for ages with the garden hose in his hand, mesmerized by the flow of water. Occasionally he experimented with altering the flow of water by gently waving the hose around, and one time – thankfully only one time – he had to find out what happened when the water was aimed directly at his aunt’s pants (she laughed) (gravity, centripetal forces, cause and effect).

I wonder what else they learned.

Yay!
