Spelling Tests

I think I was the only kid in class who genuinely liked spelling tests.

Years later, I’m realizing there are a whole bunch of happier alternatives to the spelling word list. Try these:

a) Crossword puzzles

b) Make a secret code for each letter of the alphabet. (For example, d=6, o=3, g=11. dog then becomes 6 3 11.)

c) Gesture it.

d) Word searches

e) Scrambled letters

If you’re feeling creative (you are, aren’t you?), you’ll have your students make these for each other. Add your suggestions in the comments below.

Ok, I admit it. I still like spelling tests. Especially ones like the 25 Most Commonly Misspelled Words. I scored 70%. You? Go ahead. Give it a try!
