Zebra Cake

Zebra?! To eat?

My fifth graders and I were taking turns naming a food for each letter of the alphabet. We couldn’t think of anything for v and x. That was okay, I said.

Then, the last student who had to think of a z food suddenly screeched, “Zebra!”

A moment of silence while we thought about that.

Ummm…..zebra cake…right?

Yes, yes, of course.



Zebra Cake


1. Make your favorite plain cake batter, then divide it equally into two bowls.

2. Add 2 tablespoons dark cocoa powder to one bowl and mix.

3. Place each batter in a zip bag. Cut a corner tip and start squeezing about 1 tbsp into the cake pan, alternating both bags, until you are done. (Do this process as fast as you can!)

4. Bake in a preheated oven (350° F/176° C) for about 30 to 40 min.
