Buoy: booey vs boy

Word Nerd Moment:

That big red, orange, or yellow floating thing out in the ocean…what do you call it?

I call it a life booey.

But I’m apt to talk about the life booey’s buoyancy or boo-yan-see.

If you happen to be or know a pronunciologist, please do explain this to me.

  1. Simple. It sounds like “boy”. When Americans changed their spelling and pronunciation for the petty reason of being different from the British (I’m not kidding, this is the reason for the difference between American and British English), they “broke” a lot of words in this way.

    • I take it that means I’ve been mispronouncing it all these years, because I’m not sure I’ve ever said “boy-an-see”. Hmmm, I wonder where I got my pronunciation from.

      Thanks for the explanation!
